Aussie Distributor / Dealer Ads
- Aug 16, 2010 - 22:24
I decided it might be nice to see a few of the ads that lured the customers in. Here are a few ads from various newspapers 260AC and Myself have collected.

It's here!  - New South Wales -  First sight of the Land Rover - Sydney Morning Herald 13-12-1948

The Shows around Australia of 1949 was the first time the mass public saw the Land Rover. Many of the first vehicle's were painted in advertising to show the vehicle off. I find the shows around the country of great interest as my vehicle R860855 was used by the local dealer of Goulburn to exibit at the 1949 Goulburn Show.

In the case of New South Wales R860138 was sign written with the words " The British Land Rover"

1949 Royal Show Supplement 2-4-1949

Here you can see R860138 used in this ad in the Sydney Morning Herald 12-4-1949

Finally a great ad showing the almost standard issue 1950 80" Grenville sold in astonishing numbers. Note the special extra land rover badge added to the front wing. More on this soon.

Typical isn't it.  Us Pommies have been secretly searching for the centre steer for years in the UK and all the time it was down under.

Can we expect to hear that you've followed up a few clues and found it in perfect condition on a sheep farm near you?

I have ad's from these 3 Dealers:

Grenville Motors - Sydney, New South Wales
Grenville Motors sold the most Land Rovers in Australia more then any other dealerThey controlled over 300,000 sq mi of Dealer Territory. Even sometimes into Annand and Thompson's Northern Rivers area of New South Wales.

Grenville Motors Vehicles have many interesting quirks from plastic warning signs attached to the Bulkhead to a Special Land Rover Badge attached on the passenger side mudguard.

Regent Motors - Melbourne, Victoria
Regent Motors was the Distributor for Victoria and Tasmania. Whilst not having a large area (126,791 sq mi) they had an area with the highest population density and fertile farm land. Which contribuited to there high sales  Regent sold the second most Land Rovers.

Annand and Thompson - Brisbane, Queensland
Annand and Thompson was the third largest Distributor in Australia with over 715,309 sq mi of Dealer Territory. But the varst majority of it arid and uninhabitable. Annand and Thompson also serviced the Northern Rivers of New South Wales due to the idle location of Brisbane to the top of NSW this was closer to these dealers then Sydney.

More Soon

Regent Motors

Vehicle Pictured is Victorian Registration NO-234. This 1949 Model still exists to this day.

R861595    861820     21/2/49
R861596    861799     23/2/49
