Carrying Sant a on a close coupled trailer on the highway is probably a legal offence.

Undoubtedly, and from an insurance point of view probably a complete catastrophe. If Santa is "at work" (a Santa for hire) then the full weight of HASAW would also apply. Perhaps the reason he has so many Elf ('n'Safety ?) helpers is to undertake the risk assessments.

I hope that enforcement authorities might be inclined to be somewhat liberal, but in all seriousness an accident involving injury to a trailed Santa is not something I would want to risk.  Probably best to put a dummy on the trailer nowadays (although perhaps you could argue unkindly that in these times anyone who was willing to ride on a trailer already is one).

The rules about people travelling in caravans (and by extension trailers?) only applies to close coupled trailers?  Possibly a turntable steered trailer could carry Santa, since a turntable steered living van can carry people?

Probably safer behind a series one in low gear then behind a bunch of stampeding reindeer... ;D

Glad to see someone else using a Minerva tow point on an RHD Series 1 https://www.lrsoc.com/forum/index.php?topic=7431.msg327030#msg327030 .

I can't imagine there being any regulations against slow-speed parade float towing, but perhaps the UK is now applying more stringent regulations than the EU these days.

Upon a bit of reasearch it appears that passengers can be carried on a trailer provided it is not for "Hire or Reward"  and remain within UK law.

Providing it was all done voluntarily and no payment was made for fuel cost, drivers time etc, then no probs.

Really? That surprises me but I'm happy to take your word for it. Presumably now he has to be seated and wearing a seatbelt, and also unless the float was constructed prior to 1982 or thereabouts I would have thought it would have to be type approved or SVAd if it's carrying people.

I'm sure that we can bah humbug the party atmosphere if we put our minds to it!

I'm even surprised in this excessively "woke" age that most Santas are still IC1 males of a certain age.

I'm sorry... I'm not changing my gender as a Santa just to please the woke brigade!  And it's only once you reach a 'certain age' that you can do without the white fluffy beard that has elastic over the ears.

Having once been a stand-in for (Sir) Tony Robinson*, depping for Santa posed no problem.  I did it in a Welsh accent, claiming that the English Santa was staying in Qatar to watch the rest of the footie, but there was little point in a Welsh Santa staying out there now.  It seemed to satisfy the kids.

*Seriously!

Fantastic! Glad its made it that far. Do keep us posted.

Arrived safe and sound.  First order of business was to replace the Series 2 indicator lenses with  Series 1 lenses and remove the defender side mirrors.  My 86" has a center rear view mirror but I notice the 107 does not have one.  Could it have had one originally?

By law a vehicle of this age is required to have two mirrors, One mirror must be externally mounted on the offside, and a second mirror can be within in the vehicle on the windscreen or alternatively externally on the nearside.

Whatever a Land-Rover was built with does not give the current owner the legal right to run with just a single mirror. (no grandfather's rights)  It needs two mirrors as specified in C and U regulations.

Where see "A wheeled motor vehicle, not in items 1 to 5, first used before 1st June 1978 (or in the case of a Ford Transit motor car, 10th July 1978) and a track-laying motor vehicle which is not an agricultural motor vehicle first used on or after 1st January 1958, which in either case is—

(a) a bus;

(b) a dual-purpose vehicle; or

(c) a goods vehicle."

Mirrors to be fitted  "At least one mirror fitted externally on the offside of the vehicle and at least one mirror fitted either internally or externally on the near-side of the vehicle."

You will that  sinse a series one land-Rover is a dual purpose vehicle manufactured before 1st June 1978,  It needs two mirrors, One has to be external on the offside.  If there is no internal mirror, then it needs an external mirror on the nearside.

1 Thank you.

If you remove the offside Defender mirror it will need replacing with a more period external mirror (wing, windscreen or doortop) and the nearside mirror can only be taken off and not replaced if you fit an internal mirror to replace it.

The construction and use regs for the US I'd guess are broadly similar to our own, but it would be worth confirming locally.

Ah Yes!  I hasn't seen this was in U.S.   Rules and regsa probably are different.  My post relates to UK law only.   I didn't mean to confuse anybody,  An oversight on my behalf not to have checked location.where the vehicle was to be driven.

I don't have the memory that I used to have, but I do remember that our 1955 86 came without any mirrors. At some later date a rear view was fitted inside (still there today), but I can't remember whether it was because it had become a legal requirement. Once it became a legal requirement then I expect they left the factory with wing mirrors.

some small progress.  Love the Sherardised fixings.  I was able to source the original green indicator flasher unit.  Sure beats the empty hole in the panel.   Round Wing mirrors for sure.  I see the club shop has glavy brackets that replace the top door  hinge plate with a bracket for a mirror.  I will "age" the new cigarette lighter.
