Well it was a cool -5 degrees as some of us gathered for our Christmas run and meal today. My thanks to the Cobb boys who bookended the convoy with their Defenders as we met up in the frost at Moreton Walled Gardens ready for a short run over the Purbeck Hills to the Red Lion at Winfrith.

By mid morning it was a cosy zero degrees as we arrived at the pub having enjoyed some stunning views and gentle green lanes over the Ridgeway and Creech Grange Arch. Seven S1’s sandwiched between the Defenders, you could coined the saying ‘Defenders of the Faith’ as we lined up for Christmas lunch in the warm.

Thank you all who braved the cold.

Malcolm

Based up here on the North York Moors, I don't tend to think of Dorset as being particularly scenic.  But those pics ain't half bad!

They don’t call it the Jurassic Coast for nothing! Dorset may not have mountains or moorland but with most of the UK sedimentary Geology compressed into its coast from Lyme Regis to Bournemouth we are blessed with a stunning variety landscapes in a usually mild climate. That said until the Cockermouth floods, Dorset held the UK highest 24hr rainfall of a fraction short of 24”!
Seasons Greetings everyone.

Don't worry ,Dorset will still hold the record.  I have only been in one 'cloudburst' and that was 1958.   River Cocker meeting the River Derwent has been a flood problem for centuries , like the River Eden at Appleby.   Cockermouth has its floodgates but I don't think the rivers have been dredged of boulders that were on the hillsides- some improvement.  Appleby is still getting flood prevention barriers and pumping to a holding lagoon - that will be interesting.  So Cumbria had the odd cloudburst & the Pennines feeding the river Eden had the same ,  Carlisle like Appleby & Cockermouth built since Roman times too near the river.    It's just like Pakistan, agricultural land - to a very high % being the flood plain of the Himalayas.  Th UK population is no longer controlled by famine or border controls   ;D

Apologies as a bit of topic!
My error  :embarrassed:I had 24 in my head. Martinstown in Dorset July 1955 the recorded rainfall was about 11" of rain in 24hrs, Cockermouth broke the 12" barrier as I recall.

What folks do not realise, is that our 'Jurassic' coast at Chesil and at Portland in particular facing SW, has uninterrupted seascape all the way to the north coast of South America with the resulting fetch that can build provides us with considerable storm sea surges that during the 2013/14 floods and storms saw at least 2/3's of the Chesil Bank sucked away back into the sea. Fortunately the flood defences built in the 1990's stood up to the job draining away the surges through the Chesil bank into the Fleet & Portland Harbour. We set off the flood alarms then for the first time since the scheme was built, happily no damage this time round.

I hung up my Flood Duty wellies in 2015 to spend my retirement rebuilding Series 1's.
3 Thanks.

Went for a test run, on the back lanes of Northumberland, after fitting replacement rear springs. I had stripped, thoroughly wire brushed, cleaned and lubricated them.
What a difference to the whole car !!
Less vibration from the transfer box levers.
Even the speedo needle has stopped oscillating over a 10mph range.
Now the springs are well lubricated I may try Denso Tape / Petro tape wrapping.
Front springs next.
Smooth Stu.

I may try Denso Tape / Petro tape wrapping.

This may be an urban myth, but some years ago I heard of a guy who, having overhauled his springs, wrapped them lovingly in Denso tape and presented the car for an MOT.  The tester got out a Stanley knife and ripped the lot off because he “couldn’t inspect a safety-critical part properly”.  Now to me that smacks of ‘dismantling’, which is not allowed in the test, and even if it were permissible then may not be now.  Anyone any recent experience of this?

The tester should not have done that. Most prewar cars of quality had leather-gaitored springs.

A few decades ago I owned a Derby Bentley with gaitored springs and there would have been a brouhaha and then some if the tester had done that. Mind you they were usually too busy trying to fail the braking system to worry about the springs  (the front brakes were servo operated off the gearbox so only worked when the car was moving, this always baffled those too young to know).

Most prewar cars of quality had leather-gaitored springs.

And things of leather-stitchers' beauty they usually were.  As I say, it may have been an urban myth.

With the aid of my new book I got for Christmas I have dated my windscreen to the first quarter of 1957. So it could well be an original windscreen on my 88".
Thank you Santa, and James Taylor

Took my 88 for a new years drive on a sunny but chilly day without my tilt as its being repaired and I am getting a new rear hoop to replace the badly bent one.
The pictures were taken at Framlingham college with the castle in the backround.
Happy new year all.

Kevin

Meant to post Saturday... Tried the obvious & still non start, waited 10 minutes for the AA not to answer, then recovered my lads Series 3 lightweight across town.

Nice to know it can still work as designed!

Bored out the 20o and 70o angles in replacement valve seats.

The seats themselves will be cut with a carbide cutter and pilot when the inserts are fitted to the Minerva.
