How many components in a Series 1?
- Jan 20, 2021 - 16:47
Im half way thro rebuilding a 1956 86" from Australia. I am doing all the work myself and the hours required and cost is truly unbelievable. It makes me realise why some are up for sale in excess of 40K.

That got me wondering where the time has gone til I flicked thro the parts catalogue. I couldn't find any threads but Im sure Im not the first to ask.........

How many separate parts are there in a Series 1?

Best answer I can think of:

When first delivered to any new owner they were all one large component...

but, owners being owners, this unified state of affairs did not last long :lipsrsealed: :tic:

There are definitely less parts than bits as bits are what you are left with when all the parts are broken!  ;D

Most probably have less parts now than when they left the factory.

The number depends how many shims are fitted in the various places

Nowadays depends on other things too.

Do two parts rusted together still count as two?

Or equally one broken into two or more pieces but still going?

Not taking mine apart to count!

Nick.

In the parts manual  (part number 4052 itself) https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gVpgjDu8dlCNVA1XLhba12C58sOwzDnG/view?usp=drivesdk , the numerical listing has 5 columns with 62 part numbers on the first page = 310, then 30 columns with 67 part numbers per row = 2,010 , plus a stub column of 31 = 2,351..

For scale, most modern cars have 18,000-30,000, and a Tesla Model 3 has 10,000..

Part numbers alone a partial answer...never forget the rivet count..the washers, drive screws, every bolt and of course all those Nuts

There are 2,351 unique part numbers  (n.b. I used "Section I, which is 1948-51), but one would have to add up the quantities for each part number on each page to obtain a total amount; for instance, on P.41, there's 1x "cylinder block assembly" 230845, but 16x "set bolt (1/4" x 5/8" long) fixing washer cover plate" 215053.

But stay on your toes!  Part numbers for the rivets for the side capping on the tailgate are "rivet" 300783, "pop rivet, short" 300919, and "pop rivet, long" 300969 ...  16x, 20x, and 4x, respectively.  However, part numbers for the rivets for the side retainers are "pop rivet, short" 300781, and "pop rivet, long" 300782 ...  10x and 4x, respectively.  so a "rivet" isn't just a generic rivet :-)

A *highly* unscientific scrolling through the whole catalog  appears to indicate an average of about 3x per component (the mode is clearly 1x),  so 2,351 x 3 = 7,053.
