Looking for GAD 748D
- Nov 30, 2020 - 21:32
Hello

I wondered if anyone could help me.  I am trying to find out if a Series 1 that belonged to my late father is still around.  It was a major part of my childhood.  The registration was GAD 748D.   We had a variety of cabs and at one point a spare chassis and engine.   We went as far as Yugoslavia with a caravan behind.  My father emigrated  to Canada where he had two further Land Rovers, but none were as special as his first which he removed all the paint from and polished the aluminium.

Any help in establishing whether she is still around would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Ben

Well, it's certainly about.  Taxed until 1st July 2021, and down as 'multi coloured', which is a descriptioon I have not seen before.
DVLA has it as first taxed in Jan 1966.  Last logbook issued 30th Sept 2015.
If you are lucky someone on here might know of it.
Good luck with your search for it.

What do you mean "I don't have a parts book"?  Come now, it costs less that half the price of a tank of petrol.

Welcome to the forum Ben, Are you sure it was a series 1? If it was 1966 it wouldn't be a 1.
Is sarcasm a very deep sar??

So it is. Why does the DVLA have it as built in 1966? Input error on their part?

In my own limited experience mistakes are pretty common both pre and post DVLA.  Sometime before the 70s, my S1's chassis number was transposed with the engine number, which I managed to get corrected a couple of years ago.

In addition, my Triumph Bonneville motorcycle had a digit missed from both the (matching) engine and serial numbers by the local council and when I informed the DVLA that I'd mislaid the cardboard logbook when it was due to be converted to computerised records (I didn't search too hard as I didn't want to lose it) they sent out an inspector to check it and recorded that date as its first registration - while it retained its original registration number!  At least the numbers were corrected...

I had,  in the early  1970's, a Morris Minor where an  'B' had been mistaken for an  '8'  on the vehicle number, this was when the records were still locally stored. Just drove to the office in Worcester and they corrected it without even looking at the vehicle.
Conversely when I wanted to get the year of  manufacture corrected for my Ex Mod Land Rover , it was a bit of a struggle until I remembered I had a letter from HM Customs & Excise ( as it was then) with the dispatch  date on it , which DVLA accepted.   It is interesting the HMCE had records of dispatch dates , does it apply to all vehicles and could one search it with a freedom of information request ?

This happened with the ex-RAF '53 80" I drive as well.  Spent 1953-1968 as 44AA91, then demobbed at Ruddington Depot and civilian-registered as YJH780F (the F-suffix confirms a 1 August 1967 – 31 July 1968 date, by the way  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_registration_plates_of_the_United_Kingdom#Year_identifiers ).  Age-appropriate 409 YUE obtained after restoration c. 2012.

Even more confusingly, a previous owner http://www.lrsoc.com/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=7484 said that the first civilian registration was 1 Jan 1983, which was echoed when it came up for auction at Blenheim Palace back in Jul 2017 https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C887296 .  I later learned that this is a common occurrence as that's the date from which the DVLA began digitizing their records.

Apogies for being slow to respond.  I did not know it was possible to check whether a vehicle is still registered and it is great to find out she still exists.  Many thanks
