After a couple of Series 1's I thought I was a solid 2A guy but then I found one here in New Mexico.  I am in the process of stripping the terrible paint job and trying to find out the history.  It is 173602738 Left Hand drive with an interesting Roll bar installed with rifle racks.  It was apparently painted blaze orange somewhere in its history and the last owner I can find was in Southern California.  Only 11 thousand miles on the clock but that was not working when I got the vehicle so who knows.  The engine and transmission are excellent and there is absolutely no rust anywhere.  This is my 8th Landy and my second series 1 and I would certainly like to hear of anyones history with this one.  Looks like I lost my old number which was 6381 and my new member number is 9852

So how do I go about finding more on this truck.  I am pretty sure it was imported to California and was used on at an exotic animal hunting lodge but I have not been able to contact the original owner.  Anybody know anything about this one please give me a hint.

Great to see another S1 in RAF blue.. You need to ask John Maestrangelo (austychamp on the forum) nicely if he can help you.

Chassis number is all he needs and any other details, though be aware ex RAF examples are inevitably difficult to identity as most their service records were destroyed!! Good luck.

That chassis number appears to decode as "Land Rover, Land Rover, LHD, late '55, serial number 02738 https://www.lrfaq.org/FAQ.3.Chassis_Numbers.html .


That "RAF Blue" paint job and roundel were likely put over the orange (or other prior colors) ... very unlikely it would have been real RAF with LHD, although there could've been something for the RCAF.


The '52 80" I drive is ex-RAF, but is now dark green.

I found this photo of Marilyn Monroe with a series one and wondered if anyone new anything about the history of this rig.  I see it is Left Hand drive and doesn't appear to have a heater

According to Mike Gould in his book 'Defender Land Rover's Legendary Off-Roader' he quotes Early Land-Rovers were exported to the United States with this one being used by Marilyn Monroe during a fashion shoot photographed by Sam Shaw on Long Island in 1957.

I found this photo of Marilyn Monroe with a series one and wondered if anyone new anything about the history of this rig.  I see it is Left Hand drive and doesn't appear to have a heater

. Has anyone ever done the research as to exactly what happened to the Marilyn Monroe Series One???  I have a Series one that spent its life in California around the Hollywood area VIN 173602738  and wondered about its history??

The one in the Sam Shaw https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Shaw_(Fotograf) photo from July 1957 near Amagansett, New York (Marilyn and Arthur Miller rented a cottage at Stony Hill Farm on Hamlin Lane and a former windmill at 64 Deep Lane) is a '54-'56 Series 1 86" or perhaps 88".  I've seen it miscaptioned as a photo taken in Long Beach https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/VehicleFound?locale=en , which doesn't tie with the other activities mentioned  .  Also, California plates were yellow on black at the time, which would've stood out more ... and the second photo is definitely not a California beach.

Fun fact:  Steve McQueen used to rent my grandmother's hacienda in Tucson when she'd come back east for a few months of the year.

Going by the front wing it is not 88”. It has the wing stay right in the corner behind the wheel like all 86”
